IMAGES

How often in a day do you hear the word 'Image'? I hear it all the time. The telly discusses images of this and that, advertisers promote an image of a product, countries portray images of a lifestyle they say is unique to them. Shops, that for the most part sell the same stuff, try to create an image that will attract you into their store. Fashion tries to convince you to look and act like someone else. Politicians set out to create an image that will win your vote. Banks that once had an image of integrity and stability now are viewed very differently.

THIS LITTLE PIGGY…..

…….WENT TO MARKET. Well it would be more accurate to say that that this little Piggy has always been in the market place, but until recently had been a sort of éminence grise so to speak. Always there in the background, influential, but not forceful, loud or aggressive; whose watchwords were discretion and confidentiality. There were other words that you would have readily associated with him too, words like prudence, probity, honesty, stability, dignity, gravitas and respect. This Piggy was to be found in solid looking buildings in the High Street of every town and many villages.

Size Matters

I am writing this sitting in my garden. We dinosaurs know how to enjoy our retirement! It’s a beautiful sunny day, a soft breeze blowing and the flowers are all at their very best. The garden fascinates me. It always seems so improbable that from such small seeds large and beautiful plants will grow. They don’t last long though do they? A few days and they have reached the size and performed the function they were intended to, then fade and fertilise the next generation of plants. It’s the natural order of things.

Is "Marketing" a Science, an Art or a Skill? I ask because there still seems to be as many definitions of the activity as there are practitioners. Have a look at Wikipedia and you'll see what I mean. It's a question that often comes up regularly at conferences and reams of paper have been covered with opinions and explanations. Not surprising really, after all, in the scheme of things it's a relatively new discipline.
